Case Histories

Honey and her brother Harry were abandoned as 5 week old puppies in Elios. They were looked after by members of SCAN who live on the island until permanent homes were found for them. Harry was adopted by Ken and Mags, the foster carers, who couldn't bear to part with him and Honey is now happy and settled with his new family in Germany. In the picture Honey is on the right, Harry on he left and Ken in the middle!

Henry This gorgeous pure bred setter was found in a very poor condition on Skopelos streets. He was lucky enough to be adopted out to a fantastic family in Germany-his full name is now 'Sir Henry of Skopelos'!

Bubba was born on the streets of Skopelos.  He was reared by his mother but then an American visitor fell in love with the little guy.  It took masses amounts of phone calls with the airlines, veterinarian and SCAN to pull of this amazing feat of sending him to the States but it was done and now he is settled in Manhattan, Kansas.  The owner wrote to us to tell us that Bubba now has a large assortment of sweaters that he wears to help him adjust to the cold weather.

Limpy: This gorgeous male street cat was hit by a car this summer on Skopelos waterfront. His back leg was broken and he was in a lot of pain. He was cared for, taken to Volos to be examined by a vet, and given TLC until strong enough to fend for himself again. He can walk, and run now-albeit with a limp, but is in fantastic form.

Skopie was a stray that was hand-reared by a couple in Skopelos.  She then went to a foster home in Skopelos where she was then adopted by an American artist visiting the island that fell in love with him.  Here is Skopie in front of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Frida, named after Frida Kalo by the two young Polish girls who found her when they came to Skopelos to work during the summer.  At that time she was only about four weeks old,  blind and needed hand rearing – George Michaels, the veterinarian, saw her and thought the best thing was to put her to sleep.  The girls decided not to do that and hand reared her to take her back to Poland.

Unfortunately for different reasons they could not take Frida so when they left, SCAN looked after Frida for 2 weeks. Then Chrissoula from the Alkistis Hotel took her back to Athens to live with she and her two cats - Frida now rules the roost there!  She's the most amazing little kitten - you wouldn't know she couldn't see. A story with a happy ending.

Hero: This little cat is true hero. He was found cowering in Peter's shed, with a terrible deep wound on his flank, and with only one eye. Liz and Hilary managed to catch him, and took him to Volos to our vet George Michail. George was able to stitch up his wound and sewed shut his eye socket, advising that Hero would need further surgery to sort his eye out.

Throughout all this, Hero showed real courage and patience as if he understood that he was being loved and cared for. Liz and Hilary decided to take him home and he became their newest stray. On George's latest visit, on 10/02, Hero was neutered and had his second eye surgery. Will email soon with other additions.
